Yoga & Spiritual Yatra
A Mystical Journey to the Eight Bhairav Temples of Varanasi
Overview
Asht Bhairav Yatra is a spiritual pilgrimage for those seeking the mysterious, fierce, and protective energies of Lord Shiva in his guardian form.
Known as the 'Kshetrapals' (Protectors) of Kashi, these eight Bhairav temples form an invisible shield around the city.
The journey invokes protection, courage, and inner transformation through visits to sacred shrines protected by Lord Bhairav, the all-seeing guardian deity.
This tantric Shaiva walk is story-driven and respectful, not ritual-based, offering deep cultural discovery and spiritual connection.
Highlights
The day, hour by hour
The supreme guardian of Kashi - no pilgrimage is complete without his darshan. Known as the 'Kotwal of Kashi' (Chief Magistrate), even death must take his permission in this city. Traditional starting or midpoint where guide explains the significance of Bhairav Prasad (Mustard Oil, Black Cloth, and Alcohol offerings).
Near Kamakhya Mandir. Child-like form of Bhairav - innocent yet extremely powerful. Sacred fire (Akhanda Dhuni) has been burning here for centuries. The energy here is subtle, healing, and warm.
Near Bhairav Tola, close to Hanuman Phatak. Known as 'dark-skinned' Bhairav, representing absorption of sin and destruction of ego. Less visited, this temple is deeply revered by tantrics and sadhus.
Near Maidagin or Machhodari. The destroyer - this form is invoked to remove inner and outer enemies. The temple has raw energy, and rituals here involve deep silence and stillness.
In the Vishwanath Corridor region. Fierce and angry - this Bhairav burns away ignorance and darkness. Darshan here is quick but intense.
Assi Area / Near Durga Kund. The teacher and guide - this Bhairav represents knowledge, mantras, and spiritual awakening. A peaceful energy pervades the temple, ideal for introspection.
Kedar Khand region. Connected to the lunar energies and the control of time cycles. Rarely visited by casual pilgrims, but central to completing the circle.
Between Rajghat and Adi Keshav region. Skull-bearing Bhairav - destroyer of ego and karmic burden. This temple often serves as the final stop for serious practitioners.
Option A: End with darshan at Batuk Bhairav for gentle closure. Option B: End at Kala Bhairav, seeking final protection and blessings. Omvity provides special closing mantra chanting and optional oil offering ritual.
